Change is possible only if there is a recognition that people and planet are ultimately one and the same. “You carry Mother Earth within you,” says Thay. “She is not outside of you. Mother Earth is not just your environment. In that insight of inter-being, it is possible to have real communication with the Earth, which is the highest form of prayer. In that kind of relationship you have enough love, strength and awakening in order to change your life.”
Five Earth Touchings is a practice tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh’s Plum Village to honor our inter-being with Mother Earth and our family, spiritual and land ancestors. I am offering the Five Earth Touchings meditation online. This will be offered beginning in August, usually once a week on Zoom, from 7:30 – 8:00 AM (Pacific Time). If you are interested in being on the mailing list for this offering, please email me with the subject: Kissing Earth Sangha. I will record each week so if you cannot make that time and you’re on the mailing list, you’ll have a link to the practice.
I am excited to offer this prostration meditation honoring our Mother Earth. My inspiration comes as a result of traveling recently in Vietnam, immersing myself in Thich Nhat Hanh’s simple and deep writings and practices, and visiting his root monastery in Hue. While visiting just a short while, I met Sister Chan Khong, his friend, colleague, and the first person ordained in his tradition many years ago. My husband and I also took time to meditate on the grounds, in the silence of s simple little deck over a pond with lovely koi and surrounded by the lush vegetation of this very green land.
